41 FOR FREEDOM

All for Peace and Deterrence

A forthcoming book by John F. Williams, Jr., MCPO(SS) Ret.

In December 1959 the Fleet Ballistic Missile (FBM) submarine USS George Washington (SSBN-598) was commissioned. This marked the beginning of 41 submarines launched between 1959 and 1966 that would later become fondly known as the “41 for Freedom.”

The most vital element of our national defense is the United States nuclear strategic missile force and the submarines that made up the "41 for Freedom" were a dominant part of that deterrent during the Cold War and became a stabilizing element for world peace.

This is the story of those 41 submarines and the men that are their namesakes.
